Production Strategy

1) I will explore the areas that could be seen from the tower on North Avenue. This includes going from the tower towards Lake Michigan, and the other direction down North Avenue.

2) I will gather images taken at night, images incorporating water, and images using a Dutch Angle.

3) I will capture sound by recording with the microphones as far apart from each other as possible, and as closely as possible to what I am recording.

Are there any striking vantage points?
Is there an interesting river bank area?
Are there many people on the bike/walking path by the river?
Can I stand in the middle of North Ave. anywhere?
Are there rocks that I can stand on Lake Michigan?

Can I get away from the sound of cars anywhere?

I had been taking pictures of the tower at the end of North Ave. and was walking past it on my way down to the beach. I was wondering what exactly it was and what it had been built for when I saw an old man walking by. I caught his eye and said hello to him. He must have seen me taking pictures before because he just started talking about the tower and telling me about how it had been built as an old water tower. I loved that there had been this nice, jolly, old man there to answer my question immediately after I thought it.

I was surprised by how unaware of me most people were as I walked around with my microphones and all of those wires hanging off of me.

I was surprised at how difficult it is to remember the details of an unfamiliar area. I had to go back to in order to draw my map for Trek 01.

For Trek 02 I started taking pictures of graffiti and was surprised at how much there actually is. Usually you only notice the big, elaborate graffiti, but there are smaller bits of it almost everywhere.

I was out on my second trek and felt like I was getting some good pictures. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining nicely, and I felt lucky to be able to go out and do that sort of thing for homework.

I was at the beach getting some sounds for trek 02 so I was listening really closely to the sound of the water splashing in on the shore and through the rocks. It brought back a lot of good memories I have of different beaches that I’ve been to. I thought it was cool that the sound of waves lapping at the shore was universal and could trigger memories of so many different places.

During Trek 01 I was recording near a park where some kids were playing. I was getting some good sounds of them and a nearby tennis court when suddenly a dog came out of nowhere and jumped up onto the bench I was sitting on, knocked my notebook into the mud and got tangled in the wires of my recorder and microphone.

I was taking some pictures for Trek 02 on the side of North Ave. and I had to kneel down to take a good close-up. Someone driving by driving by yelled, “Nice picture!” very obnoxiously. It was just annoying.
